History

Once used by the Romans to wipe their necks and faces, the Scarf is an ancient item, which was also an indispensable part of the European dress. It was at first regarded as an accessory for men, which could either be knotted around their necks or even around their belts. Over the centuries, the scarf was also accepted by the women as a part of their ensemble, and now, the scarf has become an important accessory in a woman's ensemble.

Some believe that the scarf was invented in the year 1783 by the Duke of Krakow, an explorer. He knit himself a long piece made from wool to keep his neck warm, and thus, was born the scarf. What is shocking is the fact that this scarf, which he himself made, later became the cause of his doom. It is believed that while on his exploration trip, the scarf got caught in runners of his sledge and strangled him to death.

Now available in a number of colours and materials, these scarves have evolved with age. The versatile applications of this piece of wonder make it a favourite with one and all. It can be tied under the chin or at the back behind the neck or can be worn as a head cover or even a turban. They can also be worn around the wrist to pep up an otherwise plain appearance, or may be tied around a handbag to add glamour to it.

There are plenty of scarves to choose from like Crochet Scarves, Cashmere Scarves, Wool Scarves, Velvet Scarves, Chenille Scarves, Cotton Scarves, Satin Scarves, Chiffon Scarves, Rayon Scarves, Nylon Scarves, Polyester Scarves, Georgette Scarves, Beach Scarves, Paisleys Scarves, etc. They may be with tassels, fringes, curled edges etc of the scarves.

Apart from being a fashion accessory, the head scarves are also an important part of many religions, particularly Islam. The Hijab, is a head scarf worn by most of the conservative Muslim women. Also, scarves, are used by Sikh men and women to cover their heads in a Gurudwara.

The stoles are narrower than a shawl and of a quite simple construction. They are made up of light materials are are primarily meant for women. They are a length of a quality material like silk, chiffon, etc., which may be draped over a party dress or a ball gown. The addition of beads, laces, fur, etc. make them more ornamental and exquisite.

Many centuries ago, when killing of animals for their fur was legal, many a women could be seen with expensive fox furs hung around their necks. Not only did these fur stoles keep them warm, but also depicted their social standing in the society. The more expensive the fur, the higher standing in the society.

But, off age, the craze for fur has died out, or may be because of the strict animal protection rights imposed, one hardly gets to see fox fur. But the stoles have not lost their charm and are still a favourite with women, to keep away the cold in a stylish and elegant way.
